Public Servants Have a Posse

A few months ago - heck maybe as far back as a year - a friend of mine put the idea in my head that this slogan should be on stickers.  I thought she was too right and I started working on this design. I was never totally happy with it and so I never printed them.  But the idea stuck with me.

Fast forward a few months and this "We Took the Oath" thing just wouldn't get out of my head. I started making new designs and I knew once I slapped an eagle on things... well, it really brought the whole room together.  Turns out an eagle was what I was missing a few months ago as well...

I think the final version looks great.  I hope you do too.  And very time I look at these I think of my friend and colleague, someone who's accomplished great things, providing steadfast service to our country while never seeking the spotlight, even as it shines brighter on her all the time.

Shout out to Leah - I'm proud to know you!

LET ME GIVE YOU THINGS

I’ve been working on a thing and I want to share it with you.

As many of you know, I’m a proud government employee. My first job ever was for the federal government and a few years ago I found myself back in public service.

Being a civil servant means taking an oath, not to any particular leader but to support and defend the Constitution and “secure the blessings of liberty” for all Americans. I take that responsibility very seriously and I work alongside close to three million others who do the same.

Now more that ever, our public servants needs your support.  So, over the last few months I’ve been putting together little care packages - buttons, stickers and other dumb stuff - to send to out my fellow feds and those who love them.

I’d be happy to do the same for any of you - free to good homes, while I can.

Just message me your address and I’ll get a bundle right out to you. I’ve got thousands of stickers and buttons in circulation, from DC to New Delhi and I’d love to send some your way!

I’d also love it if you could help spread the word. Keep your eye out for fresh swag at @wetooktheoath here on Tumblr as well as on Instagram

Thanks so much!

We took the oath…  Pass it on.

Packages out the door! Need a #wetooktheoath care package? I’ll get one right out to you!

We Must Persist

Politicians will INSIST. The public may RESIST but America’s civil servants must PERSIST, for the good of us all. Please support your friendly neighborhood public servant.

The Oath of Civil Service

The requirement of a Civil Service Oath was established by Article VI of the U.S. Constitution. In fact the very first law of the very first Congress defined the version of the oath taken by all federal employees. The present wording of the oath, seen here, dates back to 1884.

We Took the Oath

There is much uncertainty over what tomorrow may bring as the federal government begins work under a new administration. Some are happy about this change and are hoping to see promises made, now kept. Others are fearful of what keeping those promises might mean for our country.

Standing in the breach of these deep divisions are our nation’s career federal employees, who have taken an oath of service - not to any administration or elected official - but to “preserve, protect, and defend” the Constitution of the United States.

While our values and views are just as diverse as the rest of the country, on the job we are bound by honor and law to remain above politics. We are subject to principles of ethical conduct that demand we fight back against waste, abuse and corruption.

No human endeavor is perfect and this is certainly true of the federal government, but in all of our diverse offices and agencies, America’s career civil servants operate through procedures meant to ensure accuracy and impartiality (still working on efficiency - we’ll get there).

We are a pillar of stability in uncertain times such as these.

Have faith. On Monday, nearly 3 million federal colleagues, scattered across America and around the world will return to work.  That’s nearly three million of us who take tremendous pride in the fact in our public service is a public trust.

We took the oath.

Please spread the word.
